How U-Cut Christmas Trees Work
Windy Acorn Farm offers a wilder, more Scandinavian-inspired Christmas tree experience—wandering through a grown-in Christmas-tree forest to choose your perfect juletræ. We are here to support you all the way!
1. Park and Check In
Turn into our driveway and park - or park on the road. We’ll greet you, answer questions, and point you toward the best stands of trees. If we are not there, we might be helping another customer.
2. Borrow a saw (or bring your own)
We provide handsaws, but you’re welcome to bring one from home—no chainsaws, please.
3. Wander the Christmas-Tree Forest - wear boots and warm clothes
Unlike traditional tree farms, our balsam trees grow in a more natural, grown-in forest of their own. Expect uneven ground and dense stands—it’s all part of the adventure.
4. Choose your Juletræ
Our trees are more open and airy, like traditional Scandinavian juletræer. They’re perfect for displaying ornaments and lights from every angle. What is juletræer?
5. Cut at hip height or higher
Because we use a regenerative coppicing system, please cut your tree about hip-height or above (leaving at least 2 whorls of branches). The tree will regrow from the stump!
6. Carry or drag your tree out
Most people drag their tree out the same way they came in. We do have some sleds available that can be handy and we are happy to lend a hand if needed!
7. Bring straps to tie your tree down securely.
We are happy to help load your tree for you.
8. Pay on your way out
We only accept cash or checks.
9. Enjoy Your Tree—And the story behind it
You’ll head home with a tree grown in a healthy ecosystem and renewed year after year through a sustainable coppicing system.

Questions?
See our FAQ below…
Size it Up
When you look for a tree - you need to look from the top and down. Very different from how you would cut a conventionally grown Christmas tree. Cut the tree high - at least 2 whorls of branches from the bottom. We have examples of stumps that we are happy to show you so you know how to do it - just ask. You are welcome to cut the tree smaller after you have cut it off the main trunk. It can be really hard to determine the size when you are looking up!! Please do not abandon cut trees in the field. You pay for what you cut.
Transport Your Tree
Once you’ve picked out and cut your tree, you need to transport your tree back to the parking area. We are happy to help or lend you a sled to bring the tree back on. Please pay one of us with cash or check.
Load & Go!
Once you’ve paid, we’re happy to help you load your tree on your vehicle. Remember to bring straps or string to tie down your tree.
First Timers
If this is your first year joining us at Windy Acorn Farm, welcome! We are a small family farm sitting on 70 acres in Woodbury, Vermont.
Arrival
When you arrive, you’ll park in the drive at the house or on the road. We will be there to greet you. The tree stands are behind the house and we might be there helping another customer. We will do our best to guide you.
Find Your Perfect Tree
We are happy to show you where to find your perfect tree, or feel free to head out into the fields. We have handsaws available at the house for your use. Please make sure that you place the saws back for the next customer. We do not allow gas powered chainsaws. If you need help cutting down your tree, we are happy to do that for you, just ask! Look for us, we’ll be walking around ready to assist you

Unlike most Christmas tree farms, we don’t rely on fertilizer or insecticides, nor do we remove the roots after harvest. Instead, we steward a living ecosystem — a blend of native plants, birds, and insects all sharing space with the trees.
